Farm Shops in Somerset

We are very lucky to have some fabulous farm shops here in Somerset. Farm shops may sell their own produce direct from their own farm or they could sell a variety of products from local farms. One thing you can rely on is that a farm shop is usually stocks an abundance of really fresh, really local produce and they are usually jam packed with other goodies and gifts from other local producers and makers.

At The Mendips Rock we are true champions of the shop local movement and you can’t get much more local than buying from a farm shop!

Shopping locally benefits everyone, buying direct from a farm shop significantly reduces food miles to ensure you get the freshest of products is kinder to the environment and keeps money within the local community. Plus, you will pick up goods that you wouldn’t find in a supermarket making it a much more interesting shopping experience.


Here are some suggestions of fantastic farm shops in Somerset…..

Farleigh Road Farm Shop

Farleigh Road Farm Shop is located in Norton St Phillip, near Bath, on site you will find a fully stocked farm shop and a lovely cafe.

The Farm Shop is very proud to state that they taste test every product to ensure it is the best around - I have put my name down for that job as soon as a vacancy arises! Fruit and veg is delivered daily and they work closely with local suppliers to ensure seasonal local produce is always on offer. There is a large selection of goods on offer in the shop, party goods from cards to bubbles and a delicatessen which stocks local cheese and cold cuts from local butchers.

There is a new onsite butchery called L&R Butchery which supplies the farm shop, the cafe and other local businesses. The butchery aims to prove that the best quality meat comes from farms that are right on our doorstep, this is a rather fantastic aim!

The cafe offers breakfast, lunch, cake and Sunday Lunch - they are not currently taking bookings unless for a large party - check out the MENU.

Lye Cross Farm Shop

Lye Cross Farm is situated on the A38 at Redhill just outside of Bristol. They have been specialist Cheesemakers since 1952. The farm shop is set in the heart of the farm site surrounded by the cheese making and production facilities, the cheese is aged metres from the tills. Alongside the full range of cheese on offer in the shop you will find a fantastic butchery, milk, bread, fruit and veg which is delivered daily from the local market. There is also a fresh fish delivery every Thursday. The shop also stocks locally produced wines, ciders and beers ensuring this farm shop really is a one stop shop.

Whilst on site you can sample some of the local produce at the Lye Cross Farm Bus Cafe who use delicious local produce to make fresh, high quality breakfasts, lunches and light snacks. They also use local producer Martin Carwardine's tea and coffee - they are open 6 days a week!

Jon Thorner’s of Somerset

Jon Thorner’s, Bridge Farm Shop can be found at Pylle, just outside Shepton Mallet. Jon Thorner opened the farm shop in 1979 as an extension of the family farm and abbatoir. It was one of the regions very first farm shops. The farm shop has grown from strength to strength over the last 40 years and now stocks produce and products from over 25 suppliers within a 10 mile radius.

In 2005 Jon Thorner decided to diversify the business model and began producing pies, this part of the business has been a huge success and has now won multiple awards across the food industry. There is a fantastic range on offer which includes pies, quiches, savouries, ready meals, desserts and cakes – all of which are available to purchase from the farm shop.

Pyne’s of Somerset

Pyne’s of Somerset is based at the Regional Rural Business Centre at North Petherton just outside of Bridgwater. The business was set up in 1984 by husband and wife team, Phillip and Beryl Pyne. They started out as a butcher shop and over the years have built great relationships with farmers in their local area. With their foundations in butchery, they state that the welfare of the animal is of paramount importance at all stages as any slip in standards would result in an inferior product.

Alongside an amazing selection of fresh meat in the shop you can purchase fish, there is a delicatessen plus a take away with an extensive menu.

Puxton Farm Shop

Puxton Farm Shop is located at Puxton Park on the A370 just outside Weston-super-Mare.

The farm shop boasts a superb range of seasonal fruit and vegetables, freshly baked bread, cooking ingredients and confectionary, all of the finest quality and locally sourced. Puxton Park includes a working farm and the butchery in the farm shop sells pork, lamb and beef which comes directly from the farm, so zero food miles! There is also a delicatessen and a deli-chef who makes a range of pastry goods in the oven behind the counter including quiches, pies and turn-overs, scotch eggs and cakes. A range of refrigerated goods is also on offer, whether you want to cook from scratch or pick up a pre-prepared meal, Puxton Farm Shop is a one stop shop for all your culinary requirements.
