The Somerset Poppies return to the Palace this year, in two new locations, following last year's commemorative display.

Approximately 3000 poppies will be planted outside the Bishop’s Palace around the South West Bastion and will be seen from across the moat next to Palace Fields. Another 3000 poppies will be displayed around St Andrew's Well, inside the Palace grounds, filling the grass area within this ancient and sacred space. *Please note that the poppies will not be positioned on the Croquet Lawn this year*

In 2018, 7986 poppies, created by over 4500 children in every school around Wells, were displayed to commemorate 100 years since the end of World War One.

Many of the poppies, each representing a serviceman from Somerset or who served in a Somerset regiment who lost his life during World War One, were sold to raise over £6500 for the Wells branch of The Royal British Legion and SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity.

This year, over 6000 of the original 7986 poppies remain and will be displayed in the two locations at The Bishop’s Palace this November.

We hope many of you will take the opportunity to see The Somerset Poppies again in what promises to be another poignant and moving commemorative display. After November, some poppies will still be available to buy from Coxley School and these proceeds will go to the Wells branch of The Royal British Legion.
