Somerset Parks and Play Areas

Who doesn’t love a free day out? Pack a picnic and head to one of Somerset’s top parks!

To find out where was the best parks and play areas were we asked our Facebook audience, here are some of the places suggested.

Wells Recreation Ground, Wells

You will find Wells Recreation Ground close to the city centre and the Bishops Palace. There is a fantastic play area for children from pre-school to junior ages, including swings, roundabouts and a massive wooden fort. The play area is spacious but enclosed so it feels very safe for your children to run around. There are also wooden tables & benches if you fancy taking a picnic.

Collett Park, Shepton Mallet

Collett Park is one of our favourite parks in Mendip, it is a great spot for the whole family. There are separate enclosed play areas for pre-schoolers and juniors plus a great zip wire.

Best of all there is Collett Park Café where they serve hot drinks, hot snacks, sandwiches, cakes and ice creams.

Royal Victoria Park, Bath

The Royal Victoria Park is located in central Bath, overlooked by the prestigious Royal Crescent. It covers over 57 acres of land with attractions for the whole family.

The children will love the large play area with massive climbing frame and zip wire. You can keep the older children and adults entertained with the skate park, tennis courts or 12 and 18 hole golf course. The gorgeous botanical gardens are a must see too, covering 9 acres of the park.

Apex Park, Highbridge

Apex Park is not simply a park, it is a leisure and wildlife park! Situated in Highbridge near Burnham on Sea, it is easy to get to with free parking. A great place to visit for all the family. There are walks around lakes which are suitable for buggies and wheelchairs, children’s play area, skate-park and outdoor gym equipment.

You will find a picnic area with benches next to the car park with all important toilets too.

Burnham on Sea Parkrun is held at Apex Park every Saturday morning from 9am.

Binegar Park, Binegar

Binegar Park is a lovely little play area to visit, great for all ages with a range of play equipment from todders up to juniors. There is also an area to play football with a goal in place. The park is not huge but it is well enclosed so very secure for your little ones. Best of all, it seems to be a well kept secret and is rarely busy.

There are tables with benches for your picnic or a covered seating bandstand type area if you prefer.

Ninesprings, Yeovil

Ninesprings is a 20 acres country park in Yeovil, South Somerset. There are delightful gardens and woodland to explore, springs and waterfalls with wildlife galore. The paths are flat and well maintained so access is easy for all, keep your eyes peeled for the Maori god sculptures.

There is of course a play area for the children with climbing frame, sand and water play.

You will also find a tea room for refreshments and cake!

The park is situated close to the town centre and it’s car parks.
